The ACSO was created in 1745 when Joseph Thompson was appointed as the first sheriff. At first sheriffs were appointed for a 2 year term. Then in 1895, citizens started electing sheriffs for 4 year terms. Lucian Watts was the first elected sheriff.[1]
The agency is currently headed by Sheriff J. E. "Chip" Harding. The ACSO currently has 20 full time deputies and 40 sworn volunteers.[2]
Since the establishment of the Albemarle County Sheriff's Office, 2 officers have died in the line of duty.[3]
